Operation Rice Bowl

"In the face of the terrible challenge of poverty afflicting so much of the world's population, indifference and self centered isolation stand in stark contrast to the 'gaze' of Christ.  Fasting and almsgiving, which together, with prayer, the Church proposes in a special way during the Lenten season, are suitable means for us to become conformed to this 'gaze.'     ~2006 Lenten Message of His Holiness, Benedict XVI

Each year Operation Rice Bowl helps fill the bowls of hungry people, both globally and locally.   Twenty-five percent of the collection stays within the Diocese of Madison to feed our own neighbors.   The Office of Justice and Pastoral Outreach coordinates supplying parishes with extra rice bowls, calendars, and materials in English and Spanish.

Partnership with Catholic Charities

The local funds from the 2006 and 2007 collections were donated to Catholic Charities to supply food for a mobile food pantry.  This is a truck filled with food that delivers directly to parishes.  The local parish team distributes the food to those in need.  With links to food banks, the food is purchased at about 14 cents a pound!
